OGSC OBJECTIVES

While OGSC will focus on transportation, academic advising, and competitive soccer, the following objectives inform how OGSC plans to leverage soccer to positively impact the community long-term.

Play Local

Competitive Club Soccer in the Bay Area requires frequent travel to Sacramento, Morgan Hill, Marin County, even Southern California. These games and tournaments are where college coaches recruit their future players. We believe that a competitive soccer ecosystem can thrive locally with thousands of talented young players currently living within a 30-minute drive of Oakland, CA. OGSC plans to schedule meaningful local games and will work with our network of college coaches to expose our players to top colleges and universities.

More Girls

Female participation in school soccer in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) trails male participation at each grade level. With data showing that athletic participation increases school attendance rates and decreases suspension and detention rates, it is highly important to increase female participation. OGSC will partner with OUSD middle schools to expose soccer to girls at an early age and encourage them to continue playing in high school.

Coaching Diversity

Oakland Unified School District middle schools and high schools are currently understaffed in soccer coaches. OGSC’s salaried coaches, on top of coaching their OGSC club team in the late spring and fall, will coach a middle school or high school team in the winter and early spring. OGSC will also prioritize hiring coaches that represent the communities they work in as well as female coaches for female teams.
